Appeals Procedure

Learners have the right to appeal decisions relating to assessment outcomes, practical competency decisions, certification decisions or the outcome of a formal complaint where they believe a decision has been made unfairly or without appropriate consideration.

Grounds for Appeal

An appeal may be submitted where a learner believes that:

  • Assessment procedures were not followed correctly

  • Relevant evidence was not fully considered

  • There has been an administrative error

  • The decision was unreasonable or unfair

Appeals based solely on disagreement with professional judgement, without supporting evidence, may not be upheld.

Appeals Process

Stage 1 – Informal Discussion

Learners are encouraged, where appropriate, to first discuss their concern informally with the course tutor in order to seek clarification and attempt early resolution.

Many concerns can be resolved at this stage through discussion and review.

Stage 2 – Formal Written Appeal

If the matter remains unresolved, the learner may submit a formal written appeal within 14 days of receiving the decision.

The written appeal should include:

  • Full name and contact details

  • Details of the decision being appealed

  • Reason for the appeal

  • Any supporting evidence or relevant information

Appeals should be submitted in writing to the course provider.

Stage 3 – Review of Appeal

Upon receipt of the appeal, all relevant documentation will be reviewed, including:

  • Assessment records

  • Observation notes

  • Case study documentation

  • Previous correspondence

  • Any supporting evidence provided by the learner

Additional clarification may be requested where necessary.

A fair and impartial review will be undertaken to determine whether the original decision should be upheld or reconsidered.

Stage 4 – Outcome

The learner will receive a written outcome of the appeal, normally within 14 working days of receipt of the formal appeal, unless additional investigation is required.

Possible outcomes may include:

  • Original decision upheld

  • Decision amended

  • Reassessment or further review offered

  • Additional learning or support recommended prior to reassessment

The decision following the appeal review will be considered final.

Record Keeping

All appeals and outcomes will be documented and retained in accordance with course administration and data protection requirements.
